Go, Steelers!

We love living in the city of the World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers! The superbowl was memorable; and, the drama of the last three minutes was almost more than we could bear! Hannah could barely watch and Isaiah was beside himself. We were so thrilled when Santonio Holmes made that fabulous catch in the end zone. It was all celebration after that!

Sunday night, our friends, Pete, Sarah and Vicente,

along with my mom and Hannah, came over to watch the big game. The excitement was not just in Miama...no way! We had tons of food and noise to boot! The kids were in rare form with sugar highs that kept them spastic. We had soda spills, hot sausage on the carpet, and dumped out potato chip bags all by half time. We enjoyed ourselves immensely!

After the victory, we joined our neighbors outside to celebrate with the rest of our city. The kids stood along E. Liberty Blvd. waving their terrible towels while the passers by honked their horns and hooted out their windows. Even our policeman had black and gold pom pom's attached to his bumper. The honking went on for hours.

Then, today, Tuesday, February 3, after an early morning of school, we travelled on the PAT bus downtown to join the other 350,000 other fans to watch our superbowl heroes parade through the city.

They didn't say much about seeing all their favorite players ride down the street waving their terrible towels and waving to the crowds. They did enjoy seeing Big Ben, Troy Polamalu, and Heinz Ward. What did I enjoy seeing...not too much...I could barely see anything over the sea of people in front of me. The kids were fortunate enough to find a some newspaper boxes to stand on and see over the crowd. They tried to keep me informed and I did manage a couple of pictures.

We also caught up with our friends, Mark and Joanna. We warmed up together in the Mellon building and then, weary, travelled together to find a bus to take us all home. I was proudest of my children for having smiling faces and positive attitudes even as we walked and walked and walked. It was an adventure that will stick with us a long time!

This Day

O.K. Time to update. Three months ago I left my thoughts and haven't written since. It's hard to stay in certain habits.

I was thinking about self discipline today, about how hard it is to do something day in and day out. I try to get up around 5:30 or 6:00 each day, but lately I have had a hard time having the discipline to rise in the darkness and start my day early. The impact of this foible makes the day more difficult. Often my patience runs shorter and I have a sense of rush instead of peace when I don't get up early enough.

I was also thinking about the challenge of doing daily chores with the kids. They help out with what I ask of them, but I know we would greatly benefit from a better routine. I have yet to stumble upon the best time of day to do this, but I am committing this to the Lord and asking him to guide us in this.

We are taught that, as Christians, self control is something we can expect from the Holy Spirit. I have experienced his help in this and am hopeful He will continue to work this fruit in my life and the life of my family. I am praying that He will give us the control to do the things we need to do, day after day, without failing. I am asking Him to help us conquer the flesh and overcome.
